17. What is the effect of Steinbeck’s use of intercalary chapters?

-
The intercalary chapters relate the joad's problems to the problems of the entire country. In this case, we get the farmer's perspective of the situation. It allows the reader to grasp their feelings, therefore connecting us closer to the novel. The intercalary chapters also provide allegorical symbolism. In other words, Steinbeck puts in things that aren't related to the book really to symbolize some of the major themes of the book.
